Traditional Rehab

The traditional center for rehabilitation has been at a major medical facility or related site. As detailed at the Who Will Help... [1] section of the Virtual Hospital [2] web pages, key players will often include:

  • Physiatrist (M.D. specializing in rehab)
  • Speech Therapist
  • Physical Therapist
  • Occupational Therapist
  • Neuropsychologist
  • Other physicians, surgeons, and therapists, as needed...

TBI often occurs as a result of motor vehicle or other accidents. Thus, a whole host of medical or surgical specialists may be involved at one point or another. Obviously, in the emergency/trauma stages of early recovery from TBI, there's no better place that you could be. See the excellent Acute Brain Injury [3] guide published at the Virtual Hospital [4] site for details on traditional approaches.

This TBI Alternatives site is dedicated to adding to and expanding upon what is possible via traditional rehab. The traditional view is "deficit-based" -- focusing on remediation of deficits -- which might be perfect at the start, but which is self-limiting later. We recommend that, for the greatest long-term recovery possible, the approach must be "strength-based" -- focusing on a person's strengths and building on them for the future.

Please see the Reasons To Change [5], Alternatives [6], and Things To Do Today [7] pages of this site for some initial ideas on how to accomplish this.
